The WinChip2 was introduced in 1998 as a follow up to the original C6 line. The WinChip 2 was designed to overcome some of the shortcomings
of the original WinChip. It features enhancements to the processor core as well as increased speeds. IDT though designed this chip with the
upgrader in mind. This chip still runs with a core voltage of 3.5v, making it an ideal upgrade option for owners of pre-MMX Socket 7
motherboards. It allows owners to upgrade to the benefits of MMX (well, if software vendors had taken up MMX) and AMD's "3D Now!"
instructions. This is a more viable upgrade option than trying to track down an elusive Intel Pentium 200 on the second hand market.
There have been significant revisions to the 225/240 MHz processors
with the release of the WinChip C6-2 which saw the implementation of AMD's 3D Now! technology. The
Processor Emporium can only recomment the IDT WinChip C6 to those on a tight budget, or to those who do not posess a motherboard which can
cope with split voltage requirements. To those whose boards meet these requirements and especially owners of Super Socket 7 systems the
WinChip 2 simply does not have the performance to match its
rivals with the 240 MHz chip is priced only £12 below the AMD K6-2 300 MHz, which makes it look even less of a bargain. Only consider the
WinChip if the system it is in offers a significant price advantage over other systems. When buying the chip alone, the Processor Emporium
would reccomend possibly looking at used AMD K6 processors as they would offer significantly more power for equivalent expenditure.
