TMC Ai5tv in use

In use the Ai5tv has proved to be a very good little motherboard indeed. Its reliability has been first class in nearly 18 months of running, and it allowed the AMD K6 to show its talents as a truly outstanding processor. Compatibility problems have never been an issue with this board as it has run a different cards and software without any due cause for concern. Indeed the machine that this particular example of this board is fitted to, has now become the Processor Emporium's benchmark for reliability, something which many newer machines cannot claim.

The Ai5tv is also a very well though out motherboard as regards its layout too. The Socket 7 adaptor does not foul any of the expansion slots as it does with some other Socket 7 boards as it is located up towards the PCI slots and away from the ISA slots. This is very good for those running AMD and Cyrix processors which need larger heat sinks than the Intel Pentium processor. The memory sockets are well laid out although they are obscured by the positioning of the IDE connecotors which mean lengths of lead are dangled over them. This though was fixed with version 2 of this board which saw IDE and Floppy disk lead connectors positioned near to the Socket 7 connector.

My only gripes with this board are that it only accomodates one DIMM socket and does not support AMD K6 233 processors. The expansion ability of this board are restricted by the fact that only 64 Mb of SDRAM can be fitted, and the fastest AMD chip that can be fitted is a K6 200.

TMC Ai5tv, the Verdict

In the opinion of the Processor Emporium the TMC Ai5tv is a truly outstanding motherboard. Its reliability has never been in question over 18 months of intensive running and it has never had any compatibility problems. It's feature set may seem limited in light of newer boards, but that misses the point. As a VX chipset motherboard this is one of the best in our opinion, although there may be a few minor gripes such as only 1 DIMM socket and the inability to run a K6 233, this does not obscure the fact that this is a truly outstanding motherboard.
